The Endocannabinoid System: What, How, and Why?

There are so many components to the world of Cannabis. From the types of uses to the hallucinogenic capabilities. The conversation is extensive and endless. We’ve already discussed that CBD products do not have a hallucinogenic effect. CBD does not contain the element THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis that gets you high. However, studies have shown that there are incredible benefits to introducing CBD into your daily regimen, and it all begins with the Endocannabinoid System.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

Many people have not heard of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). So, there are probably a lot of questions floating around with the first being, “how do you pronounce, ‘endocannabinoid’?” Here you go: en-dō- kə-ˈna-bə-ˌnȯid. With that little detail out of the way, let’s delve into this topic a little further.

ECS is an essential, regulatory system located in the brain, central and peripheral nervous systems. The core function of this section of the brain is to regulate specific functions of the body. The ECS consists of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors which controls appetite, pain sensation, mood, and memory. ECS is fundamentally the connection between the mind and the body.

How it works

You’re probably asking yourself: What is the fundamental connection between ECS and CBD? The ECS contains two primary endocannabinoid receivers, fondly referred to as CB1 and CB2. To provide clarity, CB1 and CB2 each support specific functions in the body.

CB1 receptors are located in the brain and central nervous system. These systems play a large role in memory, mood, sleep, appetite and pain sensation. On the other hand, CB2 receptors are responsible for anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation is an immune response believed to be a factor in many diseases and conditions including: Celiac disease, Inflammatory Bowel disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis (to name a few).

Furthermore, when cannabinoids bind to CB1 and CB2 (the receptors in your brain), this relationship creates a rapid change in your brain by enhancing the body system’s performance. Essentially, the ECS feeds off of the cannabinoids thereby helping the body to self-regulate corrections and restore overall balance.

Why we do it. When CBD is ingested, the CBD is sent to the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors bind intuitively in the brain and the body systems. When taken daily, this may result in many health benefits for the mind and body.
